Japan occupies a striking position in these currents which flow northward from the Indian ocean and the Malay peninsula. That branch of the great Pacific equatorial current called the Kuro Shiwo, or dark tide or current, on account of its color, flows in a westerly direction past Formosa and the Liu Kiu islands, strikinig a branch up the Sea of Japan. With great velocity it scours the east coast of Kiushiu and the south of Shikoku; these with diminished rapidity it envelopes the group of island south the Bay of Yeddo; and flows northeast towards the shores of America, ultimately giving to our own Pacific coast states a far milder climate than the corresponding latitudes on the Atlantic coast.

P358-359.
For many a year the country of Coreah as been known in little more than name. Its territory is a peninsula on the east coast of Asia, between China on the continent, and the Japanese islands to the east ward. It extends from thirty-four degrees and thirty minutes to forty-three degree north latitude, and from one hundred and twenty-four degrees and thirty minutes to one hundred and thirty degree and thirty minutes east. longtitude, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. The Yellow Sea separates in front the southern provinces of China, while the Sea of Japan and the Strait of Corea separate it from the Japanese islands. It has a coast line of about one thousand seven hundred and forty miles. and a total area of about ninety thousand square miles. The peninsula, with its outlying islands, is nearly equal in size to Minesota or to Great Britain. In general shape and relative position to th Asiatic continent in resembles Florida. Tradition and geological indications lead to the belief that an-ciently the Chinese promontory and province of Shan-tung, and the Corean peninsula were connected , and that dry land once covered the space filled by the waters joining the Gulf of Pechili and the Yellow Sea. These waters are so shallow that the elevation of their bottoms but a few feet would restore their area to the land surface of the globe. On the other side also, the Sea of Japan is very shallow and the Straits of Corea at their greatest depth have but eighty-three feet of waters. The east coast is high mountains, and but slightly intended. very few island or harbours. The south and west shores are deeply and mainfoldly scooped and fringed with numerous island. From these island-skirted shores, especially on the west coast, mud banks extend out to sea beyond sight . While the tide on the east coast is very slight, only two feet at Gensan, it increases on south and west coast in a north directon, rising to thirty-three feet at Chemulpo. The rapid rise and fall of tides. and the vast area of mud left bare at low water, cause frequent fogs, and render the numerous inlets little available except for native craft. On the west coast the rivers are frozen in winter, but the east coast is open the whole winter through.

For several years past the Russians had made such continuous progress in Tartary as greatly alarmed the Corean government for its own independence. Annexation followed annexation, until the Russians were very near the western frontiers of Corea, and touched upon the littele river which forms the boundary of the province of Ham-Kieng. In January 1866, a Russian vessel entered the port of Ouen-San, on the Sea of Japan, and dispatched the Corean Government a peremptory letter demanding that its ports be open to Russian vessels, and that Russian merchants be allowed to establish themselves in the country.

The Yowchow commandant started a kingship in 380, and summoned all post-holders in the north to his standard. He was doomed to disappointment;for from Ki in the west to Sinlo on the Japan sea, a unanimous reply was sent, tha they were the servants of the emperror, and would have no connection with rebels.

The beautifully clear waters of the wide and deep Yaloo separate Corean from Chinese soil, along its course from its source in Changbaishan to the point where it falls into the Yellow Sea near Takushan. The Toomun, also rising in Changbaishan, separates the northern border of Corea from both Chinese and Russian territory. The Japan Sea devides it from Japan, and the Yellow Sea washes its south ans south-west coasts.

(P392)
The following notes on the coast of Corea are gleaned out of the China Pilot, published by the Admiralty, London. Those on the east coast are principally from the surveying voyage of the Russian frigate Pallas, which sailed along the shore in 1854; which survey was indirectly, the cause of the murder of the French missionaries (P.293) Chosan harbour, another name for Foosan, is pronounced one of the most important of Corean ports, because it is the entrepot of the Japanese trade; - but that was in the nd of the eighteenth century, when Broughton gave it that name. The neighbouring shores are populous, spotted with many villages, by which numerous streams fall into the sea. The coast for full sixty miles N.E of this harbour is very mountainous and barren desert. CAPE CLONARD , in lat. 36 5 3/4N is south side of the Bay of Unkofsky, which is four miles wide at the mouth, trends south-west with good anchourage in deep water, though the neigbourhood of the cape is unsafe. PIINGHAI harbour, sheltered by an island, is 30 miles further north than Clonard, the shores steep and the water deep. The high mountain Popof is west of CAPE PELISSIER, to the north of Unkofsky bay. Thence the the desolate coast runs 120 miles NNW to Cape Duroch. Sedlovoya, or Saddle-mountain , rises high in lat 38 10 1/2 N. DUROCH is the cape forming the southern point of Broughton Bay, which is ninety-three miles wide and fifty-five miles deep. Twenty-four miles W.N.W from CAPE PETIT THOUARS, the north of Broughton Bay, rises MT.Hienfung, 8113 feet high; the Belavenz mountains, fifteen miles S.W of Cape Duroch, being 5092 and 5884 feeet. Immidiately to the north of Broughton Bay is YUNGHING BAY, with the excellent harbour of Port Lezaref, into which falls the large Dungan river, its various braeches occupying the whole plain between two ranges of hills, and winding from one side to the other . ..................... .here Pallas finished her survey.

Corea stretches from 33.15 to 42.31 N. lat; and 122.15 to 131.10 E long. Hence the greatest length of its mainland is as the bird flies, about 600 miles , and greatest breadth , east to west ,over 300 miles. The Chinese account is therefore not so far out, when we remmber that the calculation is along the road, which, in so mountainous a coutry, has necessarily many winding turns between Onseng and Hainam.

Seimou, the thirteenth Mikado, was ten feet high. The wives of the Mikados, who governed the Empire in the capacity of Regent, were equal in point of character to their venerable husbands. One of them, Zingou, A.D. 201, equipped a fleet, and , embarking at the head of a select army, crossed the Sea of Japan and conquered the Corea, from whence she returned just in time to give birth to a future Mikado.

http://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/40016981340

http://seaofjapan-noeastsea.blogspot.com/2008/12/index-fo...
http://sites.google.com/site/japanseamerdujapon/Home/japa...

"some pessmist lately was depreciating the claims of modern mechanics to the panegyrics commonly bestowed. To his fancy the markers of interoceanic canals and intercontinental railways seem conspirators bent on defrauging the globe of its rightful dimensions. He sees no good in having the world made smaller to traverse; and the Through Siberian line must not expect eulogy from him. To most minds, without heed of the motives of its designers, it will appear a magnificent conception and a large future boon to humanity. It is no light thing that the transit, whether for plreasure or for business, from London to the shores of the Sea of Japan ashould be able to be accomplished in eighteen days. Englishmen will admire; they need not be envious. For them the moral is that England, while not grudging to Russia, or declining to profit by, and advantages of the undertaking, should employ speedily its own means for effectiong analogus abridgments of time and space. Many correspondents are prepared to remind the British public of the profit the Empire might derive, for instance, from a railway alon the Euphrates Valley. That and other land routes to and through Asia have doubtlesstheir adventages.

There are some small trout in the streams, and we found the climate very pleasant. The "Mosquito" parted company here to go to Shanghai with the mails, while we continued our voyage up the sea of Japan with a fair wind, and all sail set. We passed along the coast of the Corea, which very much resembles that of Japan. On August 1st, we anebored iff the Russian settlement in Possiette Bay, which is lat . 42"40, and long . 130"45'E. The harbours is formed by Novgorod Bay , and Expedition Bay, and is a place of great importance and account of its being situated close to the Tummen-Ula river, which forms the boundary between Russia and the Corea.

Probably at no distant period those Powers which have an interest at stake in Eastern Asia will beompelled, with or against their will, to take into consideration what may be termed the Corean question-we may hope ere it is too late. The whole of the East Coast as far as the Tumen is already in the posession of Russia; a very small army and a few war-vessels are all that is required to occupy and hold permanently the Corean peninsula, kand if Russian chooses, she may at any moment make herself master of the entire Eastern Coast of Asia down to the Sea of Japan. And rather than see the present state of things continues, it might be preferable to have the Corea taken possession of by Russia;;at all events, it would then be made accessible, and cease to continue a monckery to the world.

II have already mentioned that most of the Coreans claim to be in complete darkness and ignorance of their own origin; some declare quite seriously tha their ancestors have sprung from a black cow on the shores of the Japan Sea, while others again, and notably the larger and more important families, ascribe their origin to a somewhat mysterious and supernatulral cause. Those legends, very serously transmitted and related, enjoy to this day a kind of lauful acknowledgement and recognition, as many well informed native assert; with the lower classes, however, they find no belief, and are explained and commented upon by the people in a manner irreverant as well as prosaic.

They would express Korean called "east sea" as a recognization of just a east coast of Korean peninsula. The "east coast (of Corea) is different recognization of Sea of Japan because they clearly state the name of Sea of Japan in the texts

Zoologic-Lists of mammals, birds, and fish, obtained from an examination of the packs of skins and boats of the fishermen in the ports, and from observation during my excursionsl collections of butterflies and beetles, of which I made a specialty. I was surprised at the large number of whales in the Japan Sea, north of Cape Peliseier. In one forenooon, I counted as many as fourteen, sperm and scragland during the voyage, without keeping a special lookout, twenty-four. The large oyster, which abounds in the great harbour of Genzanshin, is equal to the second quality of American oyster. With respect to the large pearls of Corea, to which frequent allusion is made in Chinese history, I found nonel; ornaments, in fact, being rare, limited to several only for the hair and hat, of jade, tortoise-shell, lead, and felspar.

With Gilbert and Foster to translate, and Willis to or-ganize a carrying combine, they were pushed to the far-thest limits of the land. A way up on the Yalu they were to be found papering the walls, sometimes upside down and inside out, but, "never mind, send on more";on to distant Russia, and away east into the little hamlets by the Sea of Japan.

Steamers of from four to seven hundred tons, manned partly by Japanese, partly by Korens, make two or three trips a week, starting from Chemulpo. He would take one of these and join the frineds who had gone before him, and add his hallelujah. How glorious the day! A lovely summer sun shimmerered across the Yellow Sea and sampans with their sails tripped the shadows here and there.

Kin Pu0suj the greatest, perhaps, or the Koryo writers, to whom we owe ther invaluable Sam--guk-sa wrote also a complete novel in one volume entitled Puk-chang-sung or "The story of the Loug North Wall". This may properly be called and historical novel. for Korea once boasted a counterpart to the Great Wall of China and it extended from the Yellow Sea to the Japan Sea across the whole of nothern Korea.

The few Korean residents on the island of Ulleungdo or Daggelet or Matsushima had sent and urgent request that the government compel the Governor of the islands, who has absented himself for more than a year, to remain on the island. and that troops be sent to help the people in thier efforts to prevent the despoiling of the forests on the island by Japanese.

There are two Detailed Ulleungdo map, one is Daehan-sin-Jisi (1907) and Korean Language Reading (1906-1907).

We can confirm the original design of These two Detailed Ulleungdo map above, is Bundo-Syo-mitsu Kankoku Sin Tizu (New detailed provincial map of Korea, 1905).

There are another two map which desgins resemble to ;
One is No 15th fleet Ulluengdo outline map (1904) and Outline map of Ulluengdo (1906). No.15th fleet map is older than "New Korean detailed map". Okuhara's Ulluengdo outline map (1906) is newer than "New Korean detailed map"

These two outoline map doesnt describes the detail of geography information, although there are richer infomation of Ulluengdo detailed place of names than "New Korean detailed Map" In the sea there are depth information. We dont know which detailed Ulluengdo map the Aoki reference to design.

those two map show the information of Ulluengdo around 1904-1905 at least.

https://sites.google.com/site/takeshimaliancourt/_/rsrc/1285666733400/Home/takeshima-koushou/Ulluengdomatsushimajukdo.jpg?height=320&width=285

SUPERSTITION AND BELIEFS

Englishmen were not the sole navigators who were attracted by the unknown character of the land, and the surpassing dangers of the waters, around the Island of Quelpart, wherre the Sea of Japan mingles in tempestu-ous chaos with the Yellow Sea. Russian and French navigators also worked their way throught the danger-ous shoals and quicksands, along the tortuous and muddy rivers, into the harbours and throught the narrow straits which hold back these islands from the main land. The shores teem with the distinguished name of men of science and sons of the high seas. Following the curl and twist of its configuration a host of buried names are revealed, the last evidence of men who are dead and forgotten. It is infinitely patheric that even this one last resting-place should b e denied to their reputations. ,who shares Broughton's Bay; Unkoffsky, who foundered in the waters of the bay which is described by his name; the ill-fated La Perouse, who, in June, 1787, discovered in the Sea of Japan an island which now bears the name of the astronomer-Dagelet. Durock, Pelisier, Schwartz, and the rest- what echo do we find of them, their fates, and subsequent careerrs? Should not their names at least bear witness to their pains and labours, to the difficulties which they faced, to the small joy of something attempted something done, wich was their sole consolation for may hours of cheerless and empty vigil?
